Synopsis: Epic, sweeping story of Puerto Rican identity, class, race, activism and feminist issues centered on the relationship and marriage between Quintin Mendizabal, a history student turned businessman, and Isabel Monfort, a writer. Spanning the years 1946 to 1979, the play explores the debate between statehood and Independence for Puerto Rico, and how its status as a commonwealth has beleaguered the island’s position on the global stage. Ferre’s book was a 1995 National Book Award finalist.
