Lizzie B makes shock art.  Arden buys beautiful things.  A young man wants to be famous.  In a modern world addicted to sex, drugs, fashion and celebrity, three friends make a pact that will change their lives.

In the World Premiere of Caridad Svich’s MAGNIFICENT WASTE, Factory 449 explores America’s appetite for excess and presents an unsettling portrait of its own undoing; a glittering but brutal exploration of modern society’s superficiality and the objectification of the human body.

Directed by Joanie Schultz

March 11-April 17, 2011 @ 1225 W. Belmont Ave. , Chicago, 60657, (312)409-4778

Spinning madly off of the Greek myth of Medea, Wreckage begins when two boys wash up on shore, not knowing who or where they are, only that they have no choice but to keep moving in a strange world that may or may not be the afterlife. As they wander through this new landscape they soon learn the value of their youth and beauty, as well as the inevitability of pain and loss. Gender roles and parental roles alike lose their accepted meanings, and we begin to understand how fragile identity really is. Produced in rotating repertory with Cornelius Eady’s Brutal Imagination.

“In The Time of the Butterflies” is the story of the courageous Mirabal sisters (Patria, Minerva y María Teresa) from the Dominican Republic. The sisters inspired resistance cells throughout the country against the dictatorial regime of Gen. Rafael Leónidas Trujillo. The ‘butterflies’, their secret code name, were brutally murdered by the regime in 1960.

Based on Julia Álvarez’s popular novel, the martyred butterflies come to vibrant life in a warm, brilliant, and dramatic production by the talented duo – playwright Caridad Svich and director José Zayas– that brought us the critically acclaimed production of Isabel Allende’s “The House of the Spirits” in 2009.

A fascinating and powerful picture of a family and a nation’s history. -The Dallas Morning News

A gorgeous and sensitive novel… A compelling story of courage, patriotism and familial devotion. -People
